Bungie, the famed developers of the iconic franchise Halo, set up shop in their own Twitch studio to reveal an upcoming expansion titled Destiny: Rise of Iron. Join Lord Saladin, learn the fate of the Iron Lords, and stop the growing threat before it’s too late. For those that have not watched, or if you want to watch it again, here is the reveal trailer.
In a somewhat surprising (and for some a controversial) move Bungie is only making this expansion available to Playstation 4 and Xbox One Guardians. All previous content released, which is in the legendary edition of Destiny: The Taken King, is required to play this new experience. Even though this expansion is
not available for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, Bungie still plans to support players that do not make the jump to current generation consoles. Last generation Guardians will still be able to play Destiny, but the journey will occur along a separate path. If last generation players upgrade to the newer console there will be functionality in place for their characters to be ported to the new console within the same family. More information will be announced soon about this change and how it impacts each platform Guardians play on.
So what exactly is there to do in the upcoming Destiny adventure and when will we be able to do it? Rise of Iron includes the following:
- New Story Campaign & Quests
- New Armor and Gear
- New Weapons (including the return of the original but updated Gjallarhorn)
- New Raid
- Maximum Light Increase
- New Strike (some updated strikes also)
- New Plaguelands Zone & Social Space (new patrol missions & public events)
- New Crucible Mode and Maps
- New Enemy Faction and Bosses
Destiny: Rise of Iron will be playable on September 20, 2016 on Xbox One & Playstation 4. It is priced at $30 and currently available for pre-order on the Playstation Store. A pre-order bonus has also been announced: Get the Iron Gjallarhorn, a reskinned version of the original. This pre-order bonus is not a retailer exclusive. Here’s the announcement video for the Iron Gjallarhorn pre-order bonus. It’s Back. In Black.
Bungie will be at E3 and I’m fairly certain more details will emerge. Stay tuned for more Destiny coverage as we get closer to September. Do you plan to buy this new expansion? Are you excited that Bungie is releasing this exclusively on the current generation of consoles? Let us know in the comment section.
