Google and Hidden Figures Want to Encourage More Women Coders

Mar 28, 2017

In 2014, Google launched an initiative entitled Made With Code. The program was designed to encourage and inspire millions of teen girls to pursue computer science and learn coding as a means of empowering them to pursue their dreams. With the release of last year’s Hidden Figures starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae, the story of the pioneering women behind John Glenn’s historic space flight, more young women are becoming interested in science as a career. Google wants to continue to encourage that with a new program that coincides with the digital release of the film.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Google Play and Made with Code are teaming up again on a new project. According to Google:

Starting today, you can watch Hidden Figures on Google Play Movies & TV in the U.S. and Canada—two weeks ahead of the Blu-Ray and DVD release. After you watch Hidden Figures, encourage a teen girl in your life to visit Made with Code to code a message of empowerment, honoring the female mathematicians of the movie.

In order to continue encouraging young women in this regard, the company is continuing a program they started with local screenings and coding parties in the San Francisco Bay Area by providing members of the National Foundation for Women Legislators with free access to Digital versions of the movie when they host a Hidden Figures viewing and coding party in their communities.
