This past week, the south-east portion of the U.S. has been gripped in snow and ice. While I am a big fan of this kind of weather, it did make me long for a little beach time. That is where Harley Quinn swoops in to save the day. Ms. Quinn brings both heart, violence, and comedy in this special edition issue. This step out of continuity is just the taste of summer that I needed. If you are looking for a fun read this is the comic for you. It is a nice way to start 2018.
You may have thought you knew about Harley and the mayhem she can cause, but that was when she was limited in her powers. What do you think she would do if she had an all-powerful genie? Well, she does a lot of what you think she will. In this oversized special, we get to see deep into Harley Quinn’s wants and desires. What does she want in her relationship with the J-man? Does she really want to defeat the Justice League? And what would happen if she found herself alone? All of these questions and more are answered in this issue. Some of the answers may surprise you!
The biggest star of this special edition comic is Amanda Conner. She brings whimsy in the words and the art. It would be easy to believe that Amanda and Harley are the same people. Amanda has lept into Ms. Quinn’s brain and shown us what she thinks and what it looks like to her. It is a nice blend of DC’s traditional look and a little surrealism.
