Sony Sets Release Date for Masters of the Universe Film as Director Departs

Apr 27, 2017

Sony has decided to go into full swing on the production of a live action Masters of the Universe movie and has even settled on a release date for the film.

A movie based on the popular 80’s cartoon and toy line has been in development in some capacity ever since the critical and box office failure of the 1987 adaptation starring Dolph Lundgren and Courtney Cox. Renewed interest in the property was piqued when director McG (Charlie’s Angels) was attached to the film to direct. McG had been on board the property since 2016.

Today there is news that the director has left the production right after it was announced that the film would be released December 18, 2019. McG’s departure has the studio scrambling to line up a new director to meet their release date while David S. Goyer (Man of Steel) writes the screenplay. No word on casting has been announced, but it was widely circulated that Twilight star Kellan Lutz had been meeting with the director for a project.
