Issue #72 is actually a landmark issue. It makes this series of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the longest running Turtles comic series ever. In a comic market where it seems series are rebooted every 20 issues or so, this is truly a great milestone. So congratulations to everyone at IDW for 73 excellent issues, we hope there is much more to come!
So let’s jump into issue 73. This is the first issue of “The Trial of Krang” and I’ll admit I have yet to read The Krang Wars, or any other of the earlier issues with Krang in this series. But just from this book alone, I really like how conniving and evil Krang seems.
The Turtles are preparing go back to Dimension X with Professor Honeycutt, to help track down some unwilling witnesses for the trial.
When they travel through the portal they are shocked to find Leatherhead there. Although Leo isn’t convinced that he can be trusted, he’s come on his own free will (after a bit of an altercation with Zac and Kala) to testify in the trial.
The Turtles who are hailed as the “Glorious Heroes of the Krang War” are given a ceremony by King Zenter, Queen Gizzla, and Princess Trib.
After the ceremony they meet with the prosecuting attorney Counselor Apap, to get the details on who they need to round up. Unfortunately before the end of the briefing, Krang’s assassin Hakk-R poisons the Counselor, killing him.
With the utmost expert on Krang’s trial gone, the burden falls to Professor Honeycutt. Unfortunately there won’t be a trial without the witnesses they discussed earlier, so the Turtles, Zack and Kala head out to bring the witnesses back.
The art, as usual is great in this issue. I really enjoy Krang in this. He was always one of my favorite Turtle villains, and I feel like he’s amped up in this series. I’m really going to have to go back and check out The Krang Wars now! I’m really excited to see Dimension X, and to see more of this Hakk-R character.
Per usual this book knocks it out of the park! It’s not hard to see how it is able to be the longest running TMNT title ever. Keep up the good work guys!
