Issue 9 starts a new arc for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Universe. After recent events with The Foot, the turtles, and Alopex being mind controlled, she and Angel have come to Northampton to get away from it all for a little bit.

While taking a canoe ride on the lake, they encounter a giant mutated toad, that seems to eat them. Instead of finding themselves in the toad’s stomach, they are transported to the strange and whimsical party of The Toad Baron.

The Toad Baron is a member of the Pantheon, particularly hedonistic, and wants Alopex and Angel to join his party. While trying to escape The Toad Baron explains that the party hasn’t started until his family arrives, and that Katsune will be eagre to see Alopex.

This story has the feel and aesthetic of a outlandish fairy tale or a fever dream. Tunica’s art really works well for this. There are just panels and panels of all these bizarre creatures at this party, dancing, eating, drinking. It really contributes to a certain eeriness the story has. Also, the colors tones in this issue is a very muted Earth-tone palette which also sets the mood for this strange journey.

I continue to be impressed with the talent and creativity going into the TMNT IDW comics. Each issue draws me in more and more. This issue is particularly beautiful. I highly recommend adding this title to your pull list!
