If you’re a fan of Westerns, Sean Lewis and Hayden Sherman’s latest project is a must-add to your pull list. Above Snakes #1, which hits shelves July 13 and has a final order cutoff date of June 20, provides both the bad-ass tones found in the genre and also pokes fun at some tropes.

Art by: Hayden Sherman
Letters by: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
The story starts with an amazing splash page, followed by an even wilder spread. While Lewis and Sherman introduce a key player, who we only hear about outside of the first three pages, readers are also introduced to the work of the creative team’s newest addition. After working as a pair on The Few and Thumbs, Lewis and Sherman have added Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou as letterer. Normally, changing the letterer my not be noticeable. but Otsmane-Elhaou’s work pops alongside Sherman’s colors.
Speaking of which, unlike their previous projects together, Sherman features vibrant colors in Above Snakes. Although black and white could play well in a Western, this is a welcome decision. Sherman’s line art provides the gritty vibe readers expect this type of story, while the colors play into some of the weirdness and humor featured in Above Snakes #1.
Not to get lost in all of this, Above Snakes features a promising main character at its center: Dirt — who somehow has both a badass and funny name.
Image has more must-read stuff than anyone in the business, and Above Snakes is yet another title that can be added to that list.
