Much like Poe’s famous poem, Boom Studios Unkindness of Ravens offers hints of uncertainty. Is the message spoken intended to hint at trouble ahead or offer clues to the past. In Issue # 2 of Unkindness, Wilma gets “recommendations” from several individuals at the school. It seems she will have to determine who or what to believe.

Dan Panosian has delivered a relatable protagonist in Wilma. Despite her childhood trauma she is well adjusted, taking care of her dad just as much as he does her. This makes her willingness to allow others to dictate her schedule out of character. This also leads me to believe she will have a much harder time distinguishing who she should trust. Add in the possibility that witchcraft will be at play at some point and Wilma may not last long in the halls of Dansforth.
Speaking of the supernatural, so far it is somewhat lacking in this series. Despite last issues reveal, Crab Eye still seems to be a fairly normal town. So far this would appear to be your run of the mill new girl in town story.
Art this issue again delivers Panosian’s “The Abigail House” entry at the opening. The rest of the issue’s artwork comes from Ignazzi and Mascolo with a more pastel color tone. I found the graphic novel style of the Abigail House creates a dark tone that isn’t present throughout rest of the issue. Personally, I would prefer to see a combination of both. I can only hope the series brings some of the more sinister elements of the town to light and that brings a change of tone to the comic.
An Unkindness of Ravens looks to provide some supernatural suspense for the spooky season. Part missing person. Part hidden history for the town of Crab Eye and Wilma. Issue # 2 just doesn’t see enough magic for me.
