Lakeshore Entertainment and Sony’s Screen Gems have made deals for Underworld 5 via The Hollywood Reporter. Kate Beckinsale will return as badass vampire Selene while Anna Foerster will direct.
They point out that the hire was made before the ACLU was set to investigate the gender inequality of Hollywood’s hiring of female directors. Hollywood studios are looking at huge PR problem if they don’t start adjust their hiring practices concerning directors soon. We’ve already seen a huge boom of female directors moving towards directing studio tentpoles, with Patty Jenkins replacing Michelle MacLaren as the director of Wonder Woman. There is also talk of Marvel looking at Angelina Jolie and Ava DuVernay for Captain Marvel. Some are already suspecting that Pitch Perfect 2 director Elizabeth Banks could land a huge blockbuster soon as well. A fire has been lit underneath the seats of some studios, let’s see if this becomes a more common occurrence in the future.
German director Anna Foerster is best known as Roland Emmerich‘s second-unit director being involved in a majority of his films, and was recently attached to direct a sequel to Duncan Jones’ Source Code. Also, taking the role of director of photography on films such as The Day After Tomorrow and White House Down. More recently helmed the series Outlander for Starz. Basically, the lady knows how to shoot action sequences and could give the franchise the new life blood needed to push it forward. As production is set to begin in October in Prague it’s unknown if Anna will be kept as the director for Source Code 2.
Cory Goodman wrote the script and actor Theo James is expected to reprise his role.
Underworld 5 will likely be eyeing a January 22nd, 2017 release date.
