Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams Finally Confirmed For ‘X-Men: The New Mutants’ Lead Roles

May 12, 2017

Drew McWeeny (formerly HitFix) previously reported early last year that Fox and director Josh Boone were eyeing Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, The Witch) and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones, Dr. Who) for two lead female roles in X-Men: The New Mutants (aka Growing Pains).

The Hollywood Reporter is confirming Fox has indeed hired the two actresses to play Magik (Anya) and Wolfsbane (Maisie) respectively supporting McWeeny’s original reporting. Boone had all but confirmed that Williams had the role via production artwork he shared months ago and Anya seemingly confirmed her role during press interviews.

Four other roles have yet to be announced, including Sunspot, Cannonball, Mirage, and the tech-alien Warlock. There is also the film’s villain Demon Bear, who may or may not be portrayed by an actual actor.

Although, THR adds that James McAvoy is not in a version of the script. It’s possible the timeline matches X-Men: Dark Phoenix which shoots only a couple hours away by plane in Montreal. As it’s expected that New Mutants will shoot stateside in Boston. The two films also share production start dates.

Production is expected to begin on June 4th (same as Dark Phoenix) with a release day of April 13th, 2018.
