Aquaman and Mera Won’t Get Along In The Beginning Says James Wan

Next year’s Justice League movie will let us see what Jason Momoa can do as Aquaman, the King of the Seven Seas, after his character was introduced during a small world building cameo in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Joining Aquaman in the DC’s superhero team up film will be his love interest Mera, played by actress Amber Heard. Her introduction in the Justice League film will lead into a bigger role in the upcoming solo Aquaman movie which is set for a 2018 release.

Recently Aquaman director James Wan has been teasing the relationship between the two, and in a new interview with Bustle the Aussie director went into more detail on what to expect between Aquaman and Mera.

“It starts off initially with them not quite clicking with each other. But then, as the story progresses, as they learn to try and work together, they get closer and closer. I think those stories are always such a great place for a filmmaker like myself to have fun with my actors. I think that dynamic will be really interesting between the two. Amber’s character is super strong, she’s very powerful as well. You don’t wanna mess with her. I think Amber will bring that sense of strength, but at the same time, we also want someone who has a sort of feminine quality to her as well. She’s a bit of a contrast to Momoa, who’s more of a muscular machine almost.”

This falls in line with Wans comments about making the film being like 80’s romantic action comedy Romancing the Stone. The approach Wan is taking with Aquaman excites me, so far it doesn’t sound like the normal superhero movie formula we are used to. Change is good in the ever-growning comic book movie business.
