BIG RUMOR: Could The Villain of ‘The Defenders’ Help Setup ‘Blade’ and ‘Ghost Rider’ Series?

Jun 19, 2016

A big rumor coming from Screen Geek is suggesting that The Defenders could have a larger impact on the second wave of Marvel/Netflix series being setup.

They are claiming that Mephisto might be the big bad, helping setup future horror and supernatural projects like Blade, Moon Knight and Ghost Rider, which are said to be in development over at Marvel Television.

Keep in mind Mephisto has connections direct to Thor, Thanos, Doctor Strange and the Infinity Gauntlet saga, so it’s possible he might be off limits to the television division. Considering Marvel Studios needs these big villains for their own use, it’s unlikely we’d see a big name like him being used for the series. We should take the rumor with the biggest grain of salt for the moment, as the villain has always been represented as a cosmic figure and last time I checked Marvel TV doesn’t dabble in the cosmic side.

Mephisto being behind The Hand, Daimon Hellstrom, Hellcat and maybe sparking the Shadowland conflict wouldn’t be hard to imagine though, we did mention him being a potential Netflix villain back in September. Although, it’ll be more likely to see lesser known demonic villains like Chthon or Marduk Kurios.

“Mephisto is an extra-dimensional demon of immense power who often poses as Satan. He continually schemes to make bargains with people for their souls. Mephisto especially covets the souls of heroes for their purity.”

Heroic Hollywood has been reporting on the development of the second wave of Netflix shows for over a year now having named those three projects as possibilities (including Punisher), so that part isn’t hard to believe and more than likely is the case. I fully expect that to be their plan, after they finish-up with Defenders, Jessica Jones season two and the new Punisher series.

Wesley Snipes had been mentioning talks with Marvel about reprising the role of Blade going well, and is now in their court. It’s been rumored that both a new film and series has been talked about over at Marvel, even though they’ve met with actors previously such as Idris Elba and Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje about recasting the role of Blade.

One rumor suggesting Blade’s daughter Fallon Grey would follow in her father’s footsteps in these ew live-action projects, who we’d love to see Zoe Kravitz (Good Kill, Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: First Class, Dope) in that role.

There’s even been some interest from The Force Awakens and Pacific Rim 2 actor John Boyega to have the role pass over to him, that’s if they wanted to focus on a younger take on the daywalker.

More recently, Marvel alum and Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus mentioned a desire to play Ghost Rider, if the role came across him. Reedus being a huge fan-favorite for the role it’s hard not to imagine him being on Marvel’s radar.

He’s no stranger to horror being apart of Guillermo del Toro’s Mimic, Blade 2 and the cancelled Silent Hill video game collaboration with Metal Gear‘s Hideo Kojima, not to mention other horror films like 8MM and Antibodies. Norman also luckily enough is a seasoned biker, which to most would be considered a huge asset for a potential candidate.

Let’s be honest here, they’ve already introduced a horror/supernatural element with the undead ninja of The Hand in Daredevil, so it’s already been kicked-off way before Iron Fist came onto the scene. I wouldn’t be totally shocked if they had some sort of connection to Mephisto, but that remains to be seen for the moment.

Daredevil‘s Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez are set to showrun The Defenders with an expected release sometime in 2017.
