I think everyone has been a little curious what the deal has been with current status of 20th Century Fox’s solo Gambit film starring Channing Tatum.
Both Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman had been attached to direct only to move on and exit.
Well according to IMDB (not always the most accurate) they’ve found a new director. Three-time Oscar nominated Frank Darabont is listed as the project’s new director and will be rewriting the script.
We can’t confirm or debunk this, so consider with the largest grain of salt possible.
Darabont’s writing credits include Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist, Mob City, The Walking Dead, The Blob, The Fly II and Tales From The Crypt.
He of course directed The Mist, Shawshank, and Green Mile.
Frank is known for being a script doctor helping on Godzilla, Saving Private Ryan, and Minority Report. Other scripts he attempted to write included Mission: Impossible III (rewritten by J.J. Abrams) and Indiana Jones 4 (rejected by George Lucas).
I’d assume his script doctor skills are needed again if he’s getting involved as a writer.
It should be noted that the Darabont and New Mutants director Josh Boone could have a connection of sorts. Boone recently attached himself to a new incarnation of Stephen King‘s The Stand along with a feature adaptation of The Revival, Frank’s most famous directorial efforts are King adaptations as well.
There has been talk that New Mutants will have a Stephen King tone.
Fox hasn’t officially announced production or release dates, so it’s unknown what the project’s status is and if it’s a priority again.
Thanks to X-Men Saga for bringing this to our attention.
