BIG RUMOR: Jared Harris Reuniting With RDJ As A Villain In The MCU?

Jul 31, 2016

First off, I’m not one who gives a lot of validity to rumors that make their way from Reddit (via MCU Exchange), but this new one seems to make some sense and isn’t as elaborate or obviously fake as past ones.

It seems like British actor Jared Harris (Mad Men, The Expanse, Fringe) might be currently courted by Marvel Studios for an unnamed villain role in the cinematic universe.

There seems to be a little more weight behind this rumor if you actually look at Jared’s Marvel connections.

Harris best known for playing the main villain of Professor Moriarty in Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. He also played General Ulysses S. Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar winning film Lincoln, along with supporting roles opposite Brad Pitt in David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and his upcoming film Allied.

Harris wouldn’t be the only co-star from Robert’s Sherlock franchise to land a Marvel role, as Rachel McAdams joined Doctor Strange last year, plus they hired two cast members from the BBC’s Sherlock series with Martin Freeman (Captain America: Civil War) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange).

The casting department just might really like Sherlock projects.

We’ve seen Robert Downey Jr. push for actors he’s previously worked with for roles, which previously led to his longtime friend James Spader playing Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron. It’s possible that Robert could be slightly behind a push for Harris to land a role, or that Marvel enjoyed their dynamic in Game of Shadows and thought it could work for their films.

Funny enough, James Spader co-starred with Harris in Lincoln.

It’s not the only existing Marvel villain Jared has co-starred with as he had a small role as CIA Agent Sanders in Guy Ritchie’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E., that had Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2‘s baddie Elizabeth Debicki as it’s main villainess.

He also worked with Cate Blanchett in Benjamin Button along with Doctor Strange‘s Tilda Swinton. Cate will be playing evil villainess Hela in Thor: Ragnarok.

Having connections to three main Marvel villains is something to strongly consider here.

Then again, I’ve never heard of Jarred Harris ever being linked for previous Marvel roles as alluded to in the Reddit post.

The rumor also mentions that the role wouldn’t see the actor on screen for two or three years, suggesting the release date wouldn’t be until 2018-2019. Giving a small window to what the project could be, if true at all.

It doesn’t seem that plausible that Marvel would start casting villains for things like Ant-Man and The Wasp or Captain Marvel this far ahead of their productions. However, Black Panther‘s casting is already starting along with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 looking to start shooting back-to-back this fall.

One of the upcoming Avengers projects seems the most likely as this point considering the connection to RDJ along with their production starting up in the next couple of months.

I can’t assume what the villain role could be without knowing what project it is, but some potential upcoming cosmic villains could include Corvus Glaive from Thanos’ Black Order or any number of Skrulls such as Warlord Morrat, both The Black Order and Skrulls were allies of Thanos making them potential additions to the two Avengers films.

Jared recently gave a shout-out to Chris Hemsworth‘s role in Ghostbusters while in New York.

Again, consider Harris’ involvement as nothing but a rumor at this point.
