Yesterday, a rather unreliable rumor was circling that Joss Whedon had been confirmed as the director of Star Wars: Episode IX which was complete hogwash, considering it was revealed that J.J. Abrams has the option to direct that movie. The source being a random podcast it was hard to take seriously in the first place, and felt like more fandom wishes than actual reporting.
However, Joss might be actually courted by Lucasfilm after all but not for one of the main saga films. Latino Review is hearing that the studio is considering Whedon for one of the other projects, and without Josh Trank (rumored to have exited) the second Star Wars Anthology film could be the project they want Joss to direct. The movie in question they speculate Whedon might be eyed for is an origin film pertaining to Boba Fett. We’ve been hearing for ages that Lucasfilm could be trying to retconn Fett’s origin from Attack of The Clones and the bounty hunter could even be apart of Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One.
This is still a huge rumor and reaching out to Joss doesn’t mean it’s going to turn into an actual directing gig. He recently stated before that he’d like to tackle “one character” in a future film, and while Star Wars is a massive universe a Boba Fett film wouldn’t have to be a grand as Avengers or The Force Awakens. Another possibility is Lucasfilm could be looking towards the next trilogy or the next wave of Anthology films having Whedon involved creatively. Again it’s a rumor, and I have my doubts Whedon would want to jump into such a huge franchise while he’s been talking about making smaller original stuff, but who knows?
