BIG RUMOR: ‘Wonder Woman 2’ Set During 1980’s Cold War?

Jul 11, 2017

Director Patty Jenkins seemingly downplayed the idea of seeing Wonder Woman 2 being set during World War II, even though this seemed like a great second installment setting.

A new rumor from ScreenRant is stating that the setting will be the Cold War during the 1980s.

According to production details, Screen Rant has learned, the story of Wonder Woman 2 will be another historical adventure prior to the modern day DCEU. Set during the 1980s, the film will send Diana against the forces of Soviet Union in the closing days of the Cold War.

Which would mean the Soviet Union could likely become the villains of the film. There are plenty of conflicts during the 1980s to playoff including the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan which was a massive humanitarian crisis. There were also Central/South American conflicts as well, so the film could be really be set anywhere in the world during that time.

Although, considering Russia is a massive box office market it’s less likely we’ll see them being pitted as main villains. Even more so with Putin and the Kremlin trying to bring back the Soviet Union days, the government could attempt to block the film if they see being too negative.

The confusing aspect of this rumor suggests that Chris Pine could be returning as another Trevor (not the first time this silly idea has been making the rounds). Meaning he would be playing his own grandkid, which seems like a super a cliche casting idea considering the massive time jump. I could buy Steve having a child, despite never mentioning having a family in the film. But having him playing his grandchild feels like a bad idea best suited for a CW series.

What’s the point of bringing back Pine (who I liked a lot) when it would likely just confuse audiences?

There’s also the simple move to just cast another beefcake actor to play his grandchild.

May I suggest Armie Hammer?

He’s been teasing a potential DC role for months, even though it looks like that the chances of him playing Hal Jordan in Green Lantern Corps. are slim if a casting call is to be believed. The Jordan role is being eyed for an older actor and Armie trolling fans might have been just a bit of fun.

It’s not a terrible idea and you could see Hammer possibly being related to Pine.

A production start or release date has yet to be made official for Wonder Woman 2, as the film is currently in very early planning/development stages.
