In December, Omega Underground picked up on a production listing for the Boba Fett solo film which had never been officially announced by Lucasfilm but later confirmed by EntertainmentWeekly to be the project Josh Trank was developing before his Star Wars exit.
Suggesting the Fett anthology film was being revived.
The original plan was that Boba Fett, not Han Solo, would become the second anthology release (backed up by TheWrap). However, once Trank left they needed to move forward with a replacement which became Larry Kasdan‘s Solo flick. Leading to the hiring of directors Lord/Miller and their eventual replacement Ron Howard.
Lucasfilm had reportedly planned on a showing a Boba Fett sizzle reel at the Celebration before Trank backed out of after his comments towards 20th Century Fox brass went nuclear.
Even after that experience Lucasfilm head, Kathleen Kennedy promised fans during an interview in Japan that Fett was still a “high priority” at the studio.
Production listings pop-up for multiple reasons. Some because production crews are being assembled and other times it could be as simple as the word of the project is in development (which could mean various things).
Now, buried in the THR’s Kenobi announcement is indeed a tidbit that Fett is being considered again for a solo film. This wasn’t exactly news to us as we had basically said the same thing back in December. We knew that Lucasfilm actually almost made Fett with Trank, so I don’t think the deciding here is as tepid as the report suggests.
It does seemingly confirm our original reporting from last year that Fett is back in some form of development at Lucasfilm.
Considering that neither Kenobi or Boba Fett (could still have an outline from Trank’s incarnation) have announced directors, scripts, casts, release/production dates, or even a simple confirmation by the studio, there’s really nothing to suggest one comes before the other in the way of release dates.
Mainly, because we have no idea when either will be filmed or even if this rumored director for Kenobi will even land the gig. Plenty of other outlets have called THR report “premature” at best. We’ll have to wait and see what Kathleen Kennedy has to say during the press tour for The Last Jedi unless an official announcement is made sooner than that.
