Bryan Cranston Rumored For ‘STAR TREK 3’ Villain

Feb 9, 2015

A new casting scoop coming from Film Divider is claiming that Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston is currently in the mix for the villain role in Justin Lin’s Stark Trek 3.

Divider is slightly new to the scene so it’s more of a rumor at this point, but we’ve been down this road before with Cranston villain speculation. Previously, he was said to be in talks for the Lex Luthor role in Batman v Superman which turned out to be completely false.

I actually really like this idea and want to see it pan-out.

The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider seemed to believe the rumor when it was put to him during the recent Meet The Movie Press episode but couldn’t confirm it.

We’ve been extremely curious who will end-up becoming the primary villain/villains of the third film and there’s been an assumption that the Klingons have been slowly setup as future antagonists. Considering filmmakers have been teasing them heavily for the last two installments and hinting to a brewing war (almost sparked in Into Darkness) between the Federation and the Klingon Empire who are currently at Cold War status.

They’ve been arguably been Kirk’s greatest nemesis over the years as they kill his son David and Kirk is framed for the murder of high-ranking Klingon officials during peace talks, found guilty of the crime, then sent to one of their harsh prison planets.

There’s so much rich history and culture with the Klingons that could be explored in this next installment and I want Paramount to try their best to include them in a major way.

Badass Digest even suggested Cranston should take the role of a Captain of a Klingon ship, possibly Captain Kor from the original series. I have to agree that he’d make an excellent Klingon bad-guy and we’ve really missed them being front-and-centre in these films.

I’ll even go further and mention equally viable options such as  Commander Kurge (pictured in header image) played by Christopher Lloyd in The Search For Spock or even Christopher Plummer’s General Chang (seen above) in The Undiscovered Country, who have also tangled with Kirk.

Film Divider also states that we’ll see a greater female presence in the sequel. Three major roles are expected which include a female Starfleet Captain, The President of The United Federation of Planets and Bones’ ex-wife. The latter could be Pamela Branch, Jocelyn Treadaway, or someone completely new.

They’ve done a half-decent job updating Uhura‘s character but Carol Marcus was blatantly terrible. Having confrontations with the Klingons would likely allow Uhura to get more involved with the action scenes this time around. I really want to see Uhura expanding her knowledge of Klingon culture outside of linguistics to extend to combat and weapons training.

I’m excited to hear that we’ll be having a larger female cast. Let’s just hope for the most part they’ll be allowed to keep their clothes on as much as their male counterparts.

The currently untitled Star Trek 3 is slated for released on July 8th, 2016.
