Bryce Dallas Howard Wants To Play ‘Captain Marvel’; Could She Be A Strong Candidate?

Aug 10, 2015

If recent rumors are to believed, Marvel has already found their Captain Marvel in Emily Blunt, but if that’s not entirely the case there’s another actress putting herself in the running for the role.

Jurassic World‘s Bryce Dallas Howard was asked by Cinema Blend back in June, if she would be interested in the Captain Marvel part, and her response seemed extremely positive.

“Oh my God, will you write that? Will you write that please? Yes, let’s start a campaign now. That would be rad. Those movies are so fantastic, because talk about just these incredibly drawn characters! That’s the joy of the comics, is that you fall in love with these characters and it’s who they are that carries you from journey to journey to journey – it’s not just about set pieces. It’s really about who these people are, and so, yes, I just would love to be in a Marvel film.”

Marvel is all about second chances, giving Fantastic Four‘s Chris Evans easily one of the biggest roles in the MCU as Steve Rogers aka Captain America. At the time Chris wasn’t known as a leading man, but had been apart of some rather large films, somewhat echoing where Bryce is in her career currently. A few successes, but still not a household name. We’ve seen in the past Marvel aiming for rising talent, who can commit to their rather lengthy and time consuming contracts. Bryce seems like an actress without the massively busy schedule that could be an attractive candidate to Marvel.

We’ve heard from peers that Marvel is looking for an actress with a larger awareness and box office standings. Well, Bryce’s Jurassic World is now the third largest film in box office history bumping-off The Avengers out of the spot. Co-starring with Star-Lord himself Chris Pratt likely puts her on Marvel’s radar as is, not to mention a decent on-screen chemistry with Pratt, which could be important for a cosmic crossover like Infinity War. It’s expect by the second Infinity War movie, Carol Danvers and Peter Quill will have scenes together. Marvel is known for hiring actors who have worked together or have previous on-screen experience together.

The box office thing also seems to be a criteria for other hires, when it came to hiring Avatar’s Zoe Saldana for Guardians and Hobbit’s Evangeline Lily for Ant-Man. They are setting their eyes on actresses with huge international awareness due being apart of massively successful films. Plucking Bryce out of supporting roles and giving her a major lead wouldn’t be entirely shocking, if they felt she could put asses in seats, not just in North America.

As much as we want to see Emily Blunt in the role, she doesn’t have the international awareness and box office that Bryce has earned this summer. Charlize Theron, another rumored candidate blew us away in Mad Max: Fury Road, but might be bogged-down with Mad Max sequels and might be harder get than others due to her Oscar pedigree. I haven’t heard definitive word if Marvel has indeed hired someone, but that kind of news is bound to be announced soon.
