This series has been frustrating. There’s no need to sugarcoat it or try to make a grander statement. Between Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt, it seemed like BRZRKR was a guaranteed hit when it was first announced. But through BRZRKR #4, the pair has not lived up to the hype.
Ron Garney, on the other hand, has been strong since the start of the series. The disappointment surrounding this title has nothing to do with his work. As expected with something involving Reeves, the action has been viscous since the first issue.
But the problem is Garney’s action scenes are going to waste. Too much time is being spent on Unute’s past. Sure, there’s a chance that could pay off in the long haul, but it feels like they’ve gone too far establishing the main character’s extremely distant past without progressing the main plot much.
I’m still giving this series one more issue, but major steps need to be taken in BRZRKR #5 to keep me on beyond that. This isn’t a series that was expected to be groundbreaking or have a powerful message. Action needed to be it’s base, and that’s been the case, but none of the action has gotten readers from point A to B — in all honesty, we should be even further along than point B through BRZRKR #4, yet it feels like the plot has hardly developed since the first issue of the series.
