Cable Casting For ‘Deadpool 2’ Talked-Up By The Creative Team

Apr 28, 2016

Cable is the next big male lead role within the X-Men universe as we know the actor hired will be Ryan Reynolds’ co-star in Deadpool 2 and likely X-Force as well.

While speaking with IGN director Tim Miller and producer Simon Kinberg, they’ve sort of revealed the type of role it will be.

“There’s a lot about Cable’s history that I like because he’s so intertwined with the world of the X-Men” he explained. “Why he was put together with Deadpool – other than that he was in a comic that wasn’t selling well and Deadpool was in a comic that wasn’t selling well so they put them together – it’s the same reason we had Colossus; he’s a straight man. And I think Deadpool needs a straight man. Cable is the ultimate, archetypal, silent, strong and cynical warrior, which Deadpool is not.”

Here’s a quote from writer Rhett Reese on the Cable role.

“Strength, gravitas, a purposefulness that Deadpool doesn’t have. Deadpool’s kind of got ADD, and we think of Cable as someone who locks onto something and is going to get that thing solved no matter what.”

Paul Wernick added they needed someone “Physically imposing.”

There’s a lot of random dudes fans have in their heads, but if age wasn’t an issue then I’d say Arnold Schwarzenegger 68, Stephen Lang at 63 or even Ron Perlman at 66 would be perfect fits. TJ Miller as Weasel of course making a reference to Perlman’s Marvel film Blade 2 when talking about Ajax and Angel’s costumes.

Then again, I’m hearing they actually want someone under the age of 60, as it’s a franchise role and they’d like to see this person stick around for a while. I really don’t see Fox investing in a 70 year old Cable, if they want him to be the next Wolverine.

I feel like former Spider-Man actor Joe Manganiello could play the perfect straight-man to Wade Wilson and it doesn’t hurt the guy is heartthrob thanks to roles in True Blood and Magic Mike. He’s also no slouch when it comes to being a superhero candidate, Zack Snyder had considered him for both Superman in Man of Steel and Batman in Batman v Superman.

Screenwriters are currently putting together the script. The production start is rumored for sometime next year with a possible 2018 release date. However, there has been zero official word concerning these dates, but Fox confirmed the project is indeed in-development recently at CinemaCon.
