Catherine Keener Joins ‘Sicario’ Sequel ‘Soldado; Will Explore Cartel Connection To Terrorism

Oct 27, 2016

Deadline has named one of the first new additions to the Sicario sequel Soldado.

Catherine Keener has joined the sequel that includes a returning Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin. She’ll be playing their CIA boss and the trade also confirms the terrorism connection to the cartels.

Keener will  play Brolin’s boss, trying to navigate the gray area that Gillick and Graver live in as the tale turns to what else is being smuggled across the border between Mexico and the U.S. in the tunnels used to move drugs and illegal immigrants. Those tunnels also can be used to bring terrorists into the U.S.

We’ve been hearing the film would focus on the connections between the Mexican cartels and terrorist groups, but a casting-call reported on by Project Casting gives the impression the Russian mafia might be involved as well. The production is looking to hire Russian actors and there is a real life connection between the cartels and the Russian mob.

Production begins next month in New Mexico, a release date hasn’t been announced.
