Last year, we revealed that director Chad Stahelski was still developing his Highlander reboot (which he told Collider could potentially become a trilogy). Mentioning that they were already possibly looking at filming the movie in Capetown, South Africa.
A new update suggests Highlander will indeed be Chad’s next film after completely John Wick: Chapter 3. Deadline has revealed that things are moving forward after screenwriter Ryan Condal (Rampage, Amazon’s Conan The Barbarian) handed in a script the studio is happy with.
However, they don’t state many details on the Condal script and if it was a complete page-one rewrite or a simple polish incorporating the last couple of drafts. There were a bunch of writers tackling the script previously, none of them are mentioned as contributing in the Deadline piece.
They’re also claiming “pre-production” will begin in October with a 2019 release date, but it seems slightly unrealistic unless they meant production and not pre-production in October. I wouldn’t be shocked if they’re overshooting and we won’t be getting Highlander released until 2020.
Pre-production is a pretty hefty process and even more so for a project with swordplay action choreography. Using Chad’s scheduling on John Wick: Chapter 3 for example, it begins filming late April and will release May 17th, 2019.
Anyways, we think there’s a strong chance we could see Keanu Reeves end up with a role.
Highlander is currently without production or release dates.
