The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained) in now in talks for a role in the upcoming sci-fi flick Alita: Battle Angel.
The manga/anime adaptation was originally going to be directed by James Cameron, but took a producing roles instead when he signed-on to make his multiple Avatar sequels. Cameron recently hand-picked Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Sin City) to take his place on the project.
Newcomer Rosa Salazar is confirmed for the role of the titular robot Alita in the film.
Set in the 26th century, Alita tells of a female cyborg (Salazar) that is discovered in a scrapyard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals. The action-adventure story is meant to serve as a backdrop to themes of self-discovery and the search for love.
Waltz would play Doctor Dyson Ido, Alita’s mentor who finds and rescues the little robot discarded in a shipyard.
Battle Angel is set for release on July 20th, 2018.
