Mar 28, 2017

CinemaCon 2017 kicked off last night with the first studio panel for Sony Pictures. The studio rolled out all their future films from live-action to animation.

After showing us the opening scene of the film Sony brought on stage the stars of Baby Driver as well it’s director Edgar Wright. Wright went on to explain how he has always wanted to make an original film with real car chase scenes. So that is exactly what he went on to do with Baby Driver. The director confirmed that the entire films race scenes were 100% real with literally no CGI whatsoever.

The film revolves around Baby who only can drown out the constant ringing in his ear with music. So the film integrates 35 different songs into the soundtrack and script. Star Ansel Elgort was actually listening to the music the audience hears while the scenes are playing out. Lastly, they revealed with the film currently sitting at the rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes the film will an actually be hitting theaters a full two months early. Hitting theaters June 28th instead of August 11th.

Next, the studio went on to debut the very first trailer for Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. The trailer was originally leaked online months ago but this was the first official screening of the film. Which features many slow motion sequences between The Gunslinger (Idris Elba) and The Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey).

The studio went on to showcase a more family friendly side of their films. They introduced some new footage for The Smurfs Movie: The Lost Village; which debuts next week. they also showed early cuts for both The Emoji Movie starring TJ Miller. As well as storyboards for Peter Rabbit voiced by James Corden. Both The Emoji Movie as well Peter Rabbit were in very early animation stages at this point. They also announced that an animated nativity film titled The Star was in the works from the point of view of the barn animals. With the main character being the donkey which Mary traveled upon on her way to Bethlehem.

Next, the film brought star Ryan Gosling on stage to promote Blade Runner 2049. The actor went on to describe the first time he watched the original film. The studio then showed a brand new trailer for the film. Afterwards, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige came on stage with director Jon Watt’s and star Tom Holland to talk Spider-Man: Homecoming. They described how Peter only just got his powers in the new film and in Captain America: Civil War. Apparently, Peter would have only been 5 when Tony Stark announced “I am Iron Man”. He was also only around 10 when The Avengers first assembled during the Battle for New York. After, they revealed the brand new trailer for Spider-Man to the CinemaCon audience. Which you can watch HERE.

Sony went on to show a slew of teaser trailers for their upcoming projects. Including an untitled Dan Gilroy and Denzel Washington project. Taraji P. Henson starring in the action film Proud Mary. And lastly the female comedy Rough Night which is like The Hangover meets Weekend at Bernie’s.

Finally, to end the show the studio brought on stage Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas and Jack Black to promote the upcoming Jumanji reboot subtitled Welcome to the Jungle. While Kevin Hart wasn’t there to promote the film he did have a very funny video message he recorded along with Dwayne Johnson. Johnson went on to talk about his first experience meeting Robin Williams. They then released the first trailer of the film to the audience. Which without giving anything away is like Shazam or Freaky Friday meets Spy Kids: Game Over. Which makes way more sense once the trailer is publically released.
