Every year there are two luncheon’s at CinemaCon that also feature panel’s from smaller studios. Today’s was brought to us by Focus Features. The studio behind last years Atomic Blonde and The Darkest Hour. Which gave Gary Oldman his very first Oscar win as Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill. However, this year the studio brought us several short teasers from their upcoming slate.
The studio started off by stating to the exhibitors that The Little Stranger trailer is incoming to their theaters but is yet to be completed. The very first clip they showed however was a dance off scene from Johnny English Strikes Back. The studio then showed us Spike Lee’s BlackKklansman. The story about Ron Stallworth, the first African-American police officer in Colorado Springs to work undercover and take down the Ku Klux Klan. During the teaser it is revealed that Topher Grace will also star in the film as Grand Wizard David Duke. Lastly, they showed an extended trailer for Who Want’s To Be My Neighbor? The documentary about Mr. Rogers neighborhood and the struggle to keep it on the air.
From here the studio pivoted to bring us more diversity lead films. They included Boy Erased the story of a gay boy born in the South that must undergo conversion therapy. As well as On The Basis of Sex which is the story of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. As she climbs the social ladder as a young lawyer played by Felicity Jones. Jones and first time feature film director Mimi Leder (The Leftovers) reveal that Mrs. Ginsburg actually came on set and approved the film’s script in per-production.
To close out the show the very first trailer was shown for Mary Queen of Scots starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie. This historical tale of Mary Stuart fighting for the overthrow Elizabeth I of England. The film is expected to be an Oscar contender this Christmas season.
