Variety reports that actors Common (Run All Night, Smokin’ Aces, American Gangster) and Bill Bob Thornton (Fargo) have joined Gerard Butler in the special forces action flick Hunter Killer which will be directed by Goldeneye and Casino Royale‘s Martin Campbell.
Set beneath the polar ice cap, the story centers on a renegade Russian military leader who pushes the U.S. to the brink of a nuclear confrontation. Cut off from all outside communication, a submarine commander and an elite Navy special forces unit are all that stand between the Russian assault and all-out war.
Butler will portray the Capt. Glass. Thonrton will play Admiral Charles Donnegan and Common portrays Rear Admiral John Fisk.
Some outlets had suggested that Campbell was a frontrunner to direct G.I. Joe 3, which doesn’t seem to be case since he was hired to make Hunter Killer weeks before that rumor even surfaced.
This project is totally in the wheel-house of both Butler and Campbell, there is a major desire to see him return to that fun adventure filmmaking that he did when he reinvented the Bond franchise twice.
Production is said to be begin mid-July in New Orleans, which is quickly becoming the hot-spot to shoot action projects like this.
