CONFIRMED: Neill Blomkamp Just Announced He’s Officially Directing ‘ALIEN 5’!

Feb 19, 2015

Filmmaker Neill Blomkamp (Elysium, Chappie, District 9) has just confirmed via his Instagram account that he’s officially directing Alien 5. The untitled film would be the fifth film in the franchise and will likely see the return of Sigourney Weaver as Ripley.

Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien

No other details are being revealed at the moment but I’m sure 20th Century Fox will be releasing some sort of statement soon via the trades. My assumption is that he’s already put together an outline or some sort of treatment for the film’s story.

UPDATE: Variety has confirmed with their sources that Blomkamp has indeed closed the deal to direct the next Alien film for 20th Century Fox.

UPDATE #2: Ridley Scott will produce the new film from Blomkamp and Scott is still attached to Prometheus 2. There had been rumblings that Ridley might have to pass on the sequel.

From the concept artwork he’s been posting online suggests the film would remove sequels post-Aliens as non-canon, making it more of sequel to Aliens and not Alien Resurrection.

I’m a huge Alien saga nerd and I’ve been waiting for this since 1997. This is a dream come true if only because we’re finally getting a director with a huge heart for the source material and an overwhelming passionate visionary style. Here’s hoping that Blomkamp can add his own flare to mythology.

Are you exciting as I am to see the return of the xenomorphs and Ripley?
