It was recently confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that John Wick co-director David Leitch will indeed direct Deadpool 2.
Leitch’s name surfaced just days after Miller’s exit, although the producers and studio had other filmmakers such as Rupert Sanders, Drew Goddard and Magnus Martens on their to-meet list. Leitch met with Reynolds in New York and was offered the gig soon after.
However, one of the tidbits in the Hollywood Reporter piece included the addition of Ghost In The Shell director Rupert Sanders as a potential candidate, who hadn’t been named previously.
It’s hard to ignore that Rupert has a strong visual style not unlike Wick‘s David Leitch.
While also mentioning the studio is now searching for a separate director to handle Deadpool 3, said to focus on X-Force. It’s not hard to imagine that Fox might ask directors in the running like Sanders to direct Deadpool 3 as it looks like Leitch won’t be doing it.
At the same time, Fox and the producers are also putting into motion Deadpool 3 and will be searching for a separate filmmaker to tackle that installment.
Our own assumption is that Deadpool and Deadpool 2 screenwriters Rhett Resse and Paul Wernick would be asked to tackle the third film’s script as they seem to get the character and have a knack for writing action films. They also mentioned in interviews they’d love the chance to write X-Force and since that’s likely what Deadpool 3 will be, all signs are pointing to them writing it.
“Absolutely. Getting in to more of an ensemble piece is something we would cherish. X-Force is beloved and we love it, and Deadpool is centric to that world, and we’d love to bring an X-Force movie into the X Universe.”
Sanders is seemingly free at the moment as due to Scarlett Johansson’s busy schedule work on a Shell sequel likely won’t be happening anytime soon. Although, it’s equally likely that fellow Deadpool 2 candidate Drew Goddard (Cabin In The Woods) could also be considered for the gig.
Like Neill Blomkamp, Rupert got his start doing live-action Halo trailers, so he clearly knows how to handle action sequences. He also directed the music video for Trent Reznor side project How To Destroy Angels’ The Space Between.
We’ve heard Fox sees dollar signs and wants to start-up Deadpool 3 sooner rather than later.
