DC Comics Developing a Non-Canon ‘Joker’ Origin Movie with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese

Aug 23, 2017

Today, in some bizarre news it was announced by Variety that DC Comics is looking to create a new banner to produce non-canon films not tied to the DC Extended Universe. The first of these films include a Joker origin story. It’s being written by The Hangover director Todd Phillips & Scott Silver. It will also be produced loosely by The Wolf of Wall Street director Martin Scorsese. The film is expected to take place in 1980’s Gotham City when the city is overrun by gangsters and mobsters.

Suicide Squad star Jared Leto will not be returning as The Joker in this film but is expected to return in Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens.

The site adds on the new film banner:

This yet-to-be announced new banner under DC Comics would give the studio the opportunity to expand the canon with unique story angles that aren’t included in its current cinematic universe.

Other potential films not tied to the DCEU could include adaptions of Red Son or Kingdom Come but that is just speculation.

The Joker has no set release date
