Dwayne Johnson’s purist of Black Adam has gone back as far as 2008. So to say this is a passion project for the huge actor is an understatement. DC Comics announced over a year ago that Dwayne Johnson had been cast as Black Adam in a future Shazam film. Of course, no word on who would actually star as teenage Billy Batson and his adult alter-ego Shazam has ever been revealed. Then recently Dwayne Johnson had a meeting with DC Films co-head Geoff Johns about the upcoming project.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that DC Comics will be splitting Black Adam and Shazam into two separate films. Dwayne Johnson of course, will star in a Black Adam solo film. And Shazam! will be coming at a later date. Black Adam doesn’t have a screenwriter attached how Shazam will be penned by screenwriter Henry Gayden. I wouldn’t be surprised if Black Adam turns out to be a prequel of sorts to the modern-day Shazam. As Johnson has mentioned numerously in the past that Black Adam was an Egyptian prince who was the first Shazam but fell and became the villain known as Black Adam.
In other news, it seems that Geoff Johns also started following longtime Dwyane Johnson director Brad Peyton on Twitter. This was along with several producers who’s produced Dwayne Johnson last couple films. Maybe Brad Peyton is being lined up for this Black Adam solo film as opposed to Shazam.
Black Adam has no set release date; Shazam is expected to hit April 5th, 2019
