Denis Villeneuve proved with Blade Runner 2049 that he’s indeed one of the best directors working in science fiction (Arrival wasn’t a fluke) and that he can build upon an existing world.
This has led to a new interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast where he was asked about his interest in making a Star Wars film. It sounds like he’s more interest in more of Rian Johnson deal creating something fresh (like Johnson’s brand new trilogy) or even tackling something outside of the Skywalker Saga.
“Its something that, again it’s like, I would be intrigued. I don’t know, its very difficult. What is dangerous with Star Wars right now is it’s become it’s own vocabulary. I would love to see them, I think Rogue One was a very interesting attempt to get out of the mold.”
“I think it would be a great idea to get out of there and to go on a new part of the galaxy, that I would be open to.”
Here’s a bit of a rundown of what is happening with Denis’ upcoming projects.
Blade Runner sadly lost money at the box office, future installments aren’t exactly a priority at the moment. Despite talk from Denis of ideas for a couple more movies and a possible prequel. It’ll have to make a lot of money via VOD/Download/BluRay/DVD to make up those losses.
Legendary Pictures’ Dune is a project likely a couple years away, due to being in the scripting phase and the extensive production design needed to create that elaborate universe (the novel and original 70s incarnation inspired Star Wars you can imagine the scale involved).
This could give the Bond 25 candidate a window to make the 007 installment next since a director has yet to be announced by EON and MGM.
