DEVIL’S REIGN #1

Zdarsky charms with his way of writing characters. So much so that, even if I feel like I’ve read this kind of story before … it’s still an enjoyable read. I love how he brings different Marvel characters from different teams together so effortlessly. It’s even more refreshing to see them all brought together on the STREETS — not just as a cosmic or mystical level. Steve Rogers and other characters are written a little too on the nose for me at times. However, I will say this: there’s a nice twist Zdarsky throws in with a certain character that feels like both poetic justice AND a slap in the face. Either way, I’m really excited to see the further action these heroes get into on the streets!

The Politics

In addition to arresting heroes, the plot centers around Fisk and the fact that he’s running unopposed for Mayor, even as he begins to tear down the heroes… but how long will he run opposed? Who could oppose him? The answers to these questions did not impress me, but then again, I’m personally not here for the “politics” behind this event. We’ve seen these politics back in the 2006 Civil War event. I want to see all our heroes fighting on the ground, fighting with dirt underneath their fingertips, and bruises all along their skin. I want them fighting for the underdogs, for the people, and thank god this issue does not hold back on that account! If you’re here for the heroes fighting for the little guys, for the people- you’ve got it all in Devil’s Reign!

Who is The Devil?

By no means is it a spoiler to say Matt Murdock blames himself for Wilson Fisk’s actions and that Fisk feels justified in his actions. But are these the only two players at the war table? Or are there others? This issue did a fantastic job setting up who else could possibly be at the war table. It kept me on the edge of my seat trying to guess when someone else would pull the trigger. It’s going to be when we least expect it! The Devil could be anyone, anywhere, anytime- and I have a feeling it’s not even going to be a superhero or villain!

Final Thoughts on Devil’s Reign #1

Devil’s Reign feels like it has real stakes! It feels like a limited series Marvel TV Show, and I mean that in the best way possible! It’ action-packed, well-written, and filled with thematic art. The connections drawn to the rest of the Marvel Universe throughout the book make everything feel that much more real; They make this event feel like it matters! I’m not sure this will have infinite ripple effects on the Marvel Universe, but I believe it will still have ripples that go beyond the Daredevil book after this event ends. If you’ve been down on events lately, check out Devil’s Reign! It’s an event that’s worth it!

Summary

“The story that’s been building for years is here! Wilson Fisk went from Kingpin to mayor of the biggest city in America and is going to bring his full criminal and political power to bear on the super heroes who call NYC home. The man who once destroyed Daredevil has set his sights on The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and more. And since it’s Fisk, once he takes them all down, you know he’s going to sign it. CROSSBONES! TASKMASTER! TYPHOID MARY! SHOCKER! WHIPLASH! RHINO! KRAVEN! Fisk has an ARMY of super villains at his command – and this is just his opening salvo. For years, Fisk has waited for his time to strike, and YOU WON’T BELIEVE the aces he’s got up his sleeves!”
