Deadline reports that She’s Gotta Have It actress DeWanda Wise has taken an unnamed co-starring role alongside Brie Larson (Carol Danvers) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) in Captain Marvel. There are some strong assumptions that she’ll be playing fellow Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau.
We actually have more than just assumptions.
The first hint that Monica might be in the film is from our own reporting at Omega Underground that Captain Marvel location scouts were eyeing Baton Rouge, Lousiana for the film. Rambeau just happens to be from New Orleans and shooting in Lousiana previously suggested she was coming.
Jude Law is playing Mar-Vell and there are rumors that Rick Jones (Mar-Vell takes over his body to become a version of Captain Marvel via cosmic bracelets), so adding a fourth version of the character with Rambeau wouldn’t hurt. A co-starring role is a big deal and setting up Monica Rambeau early on would likely curb fandom from questioning why they didn’t include her.
Fans totally loved the addition of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok and adding more superheroes of color is expected to become more of a regular thing moving forward. Black Panther will be helping to introduce a fleet of heroes of color into the MCU.
We’ll have to wait for an official announcement from Marvel Studios revealing who is playing who in the film.
Marvel has set the film for a release date of March 8th, 2019.
