JA Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) had been linked at Deadline as a possible replacement for director Colin Trevorrow on the Jurassic World sequel months ago. Colin is still co-writing and producing Jurassic World 2, but had committed to directing Star Wars: Episode IX making it hard for him to direct both grand projects.
At the time, Bayona seemed like a long-shot as he had been contracted to make the World War Z sequel, but production delays allowed him to quietly exit as director on the zombie epic.
Our assumption at the time he’d be able to now sign-on to make Jurassic World 2.
Colin, producer Frank Marshall and JA have confirmed that he’ll indeed be the director.
Proud to collaborate with one of my favorite filmmakers on the next Jurassic adventure. JA Bayona, it’s all yours.

Rumblings have suggested that the film could be set on the mainland.
Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are expected to reprise their roles.
Jurassic World 2 has a set release date for June 22nd, 2018.
