In January 2015 it was announced that director D.J. Caruso was hired to direct G.I.Joe 3. A sequel to the surprisingly likable G.I.Joe: Retaliation starring Dwayne Johnson and Channing Tatum. However, nothing has since happened with the G.I.Joe franchise so D.J. Caruso went onto to direct Vin Diesel in this years xXx: Return of Xander Cage. While promoting the latest xXx film he was asked by Collider about the status of G.I.Joe 3 and to everyone’s surprise it would have included the Joe’s but longtime Transformers director Micheal Bay vetoed the idea:
“Well yeah but they’re not ready to do [G.I. Joe meets Transformers] yet. That’s exactly what they should do but they’re not ready to do that because in fact the script that I was developing, the two worlds sort of collided at the end and when they read it they were like, ‘We’re not ready to do this yet.’… They will eventually collide those two worlds and it’s probably when Mr. Bay decides he’s done with Transformers.“
Transformers: The Last Knight is expected to be Micheal Bay’s last Transformers film but he has also said that for the past 3 films. However, Paramount went on to create a writers room of screenwriters to work on a Transformers cinematic universe. Full of sequels and spin-off films for the coming years. While a crossover with G.I.Joe’s would be a great fan service…it may be too late on the concept.
