Director Rebecca Thomas Fuels ‘Captain Marvel’ Rumor

Sep 6, 2016

Director Rebecca Thomas (Electrick Children) was recently revealed by Mashable’s Jeff Sneider as one of the candidates to direct Captain Marvel as stated on his show Meet The Movie Press. Jeff reaffirming that Rebecca Ferguson was indeed being pursued for the lead role, before Brie Larson was ultimately chosen.

Thomas had been hired to direct Universal’s live-action Little Mermaid movie starring Chloe Moretz, but the project has stalled while Disney has started development on their own musical version.

Rebecca Thomas is very quiet on Twitter, but some recent activity might be supporting Jeff’s tidbit. Thomas recently followed the reporter and Marvel’s official account (not the new studio account) and retweeted two calls for her to direct it, as pointed-out to us by reader/follower MCUfeld.

A while back we’d normally ignore social media activity like this, but we’ve been noticing that this stuff tends to lead to announcements. A direct example includes Brie Larson following Captain Marvel screenwriters Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve, days before her casting announcement at Comic-Con.

Another example includes Dope‘s Rick Famuyiwa following multiple people involved with the DCCU, leading to his announcement as the new director of the Flash movie.

Not a smoking gun by any means, but social media has been helping to connect dots lately. If anything it supports Jeff’s report that Thomas was in the mix for the gig.

However, Thomas was left-off the recent trade shortlist which includes other potential candidates such as Niki CaroLesli Linka Glatter and Lorene Scafaria.

Captain Marvel is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
