Dwayne Johnson Confirms ‘Furious 8’ Role and ‘Hobbs’ Spinoff Development

May 18, 2015

While promoting his upcoming disaster flick San Andreas, Dwayne Johnson spoke to Collider who brought-up his involvement in Furious 8 and if he’ll be making an Agent Hobbs spinoff. Johnson only spoke briefly on the two subjects but confirmed he’ll indeed be involved in the next film and that he’s spoken to Universal about a spinoff.

“We all are interested in it [Hobbs spinoff]. I just had a big conversation with the studio. So we’ll see. I still think for me personally we’ve created a little bit of space for him in 7 and the gauge is set for what  the audience will want. That’s my take on it, you know, but a lot of other people have to have input.”

There were more than a few people ticked-off that Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs was sidelined for most of Furious 7, and had expected to see more of him. It’s possible that could be fixed with his role in Furious 8, and if we’re lucky we’ll get to see Hobbs kick-ass without dregs like Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez stinking-up the screen with their awful acting. Johnson is easily the highlight of the franchise, Furious 7 is close to edging out Avengers as the third highest grossing film worldwide, the demand is certainly there for spinoffs. Then again, he’s a busy guy with an expected return for G.I. Joe 3 and landing his own DC Comics film Shazam, playing the villainous Black Adam.
