Defenders: Indefensible

There has been serious and much deserved hype surrounding the Marvel/Netflix show The Defenders. While we collectively anticipate its release, we have something to look forward to on November 4th. Doctor Strange is coming this Friday and there is a connection to The Defenders. In 1970, after the cancellation of his book, Marvel decided to have Doctor Strange start his own team dedicated to ridding the world of paranormal threats called The Defenders. So for part 1 of the Essentially Strange we’re going to look at the 2005 miniseries Defenders: Indefensible from Justice League creative team Keith Giffen, J.M DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire.

The original Defenders line up consisted of Doctor Strange, Namor, Hulk and Silver Surfer. This story is a comical take on Doctor Strange trying to “get the band back together” to take on the threat of Dormammu and Umar and their plan to remake reality. With Wong possessed by Nightmare, can Stephen convince the equally arrogant Namor, the always volatile Hulk and a Silver Surfer who would rather chill in California than do anything else that the world needs the Defenders in order to beat back this threat. The team dynamics are instantly interesting to read and the writing plays up a more comedic side of characters who always seem either super serious or tragic.

Defenders: Indefensible is available in a collected trade paperback and on digital formats.
