In a move that should have happened a long time ago, Paramount has hired a female director to helm the next Star Trek movie.

Paramount relayed the news at CinemaCon that they are close to filming on the next movie in the Star Trek franchise and Variety has confirmed that the studio has brought on S.J. Clarkson to direct the next feature. Clarkson is no stranger to directing genre stories with credits for directing episodes of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Marvel’s The Defenders, Dexter and Heroes.

This is not the Quentin Tarantino/ JJ Abrams Star Trek film that has been reported on earlier. That film is being developed for a later installment in the franchise. This film is written by J.D. Payne (Godzilla vs Kong) and Patrick McKay (Star Trek: Beyond). The untitled Star Trek film will feature Kirk and crew encountering Kirk’s father George Kirk after a time travel incident. Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Infinity War) is expected to reprise his role from the 2009 film.

As a longtime Star Trek fan, I cannot wait to see a new vision of the world Gene Roddenberry created on the big screen.
