Legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz did a photoshoot for Vanity Fair while on the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Something Annie and George Lucas had done previously for the pre-promotion for The Phantom Menace, I think I actually have a copy of that Vanity Fair floating around somewhere. It’s a good way to get to see actors on and off the set and the images also reveal our first glimpses at Adam Driver and Lupita Nyong’o, we’ve been under the impression that Driver would be playing the villain since his casting and this sort of confirms that he is indeed Kylo Ren.
Lupita’s character Maz Kanata, is a space pirate who’s castle on Jakku is filled with assorted alien riffraff which is shown in the picture below. She isn’t pictured here but she’s likely the short blue alien from production art that looked to be friendly with Daisy Ridley’s character on Jakku. That character was expected to be a motion captured and these new photos confirm that Lupita is doing extensive motion capture work for the film. They also mention that both Lando and Han Solo, while pirates themselves were also heroic figures, I have to assume that Maz won’t be like the Hutts.
This concept image has been circling around for a while, and I have to assume that this is Maz Kanata with Daisy Ridley’s Rey, BB-8, and possibly Domhnall Gleeson’s character, rumored to be the son of Luke Skywalker.
