‘Full Metal Jacket’ and Stranger Things’ Actor Matthew Modine Joins ‘Sicario’ Sequel ‘Soldado’

Jan 13, 2017

It’s been a while since we’ve learned of new casting additions to the Sicario sequel Soldado written by Talyor Sheridan (Hell or High Water, Sicario, Red River) and directed by Stefano Sollima (Gomorrah). Deadline has learned that veteran television and film actor Matthew Modine (Stranger Things, Full Metal Jacket, The Dark Knight Rises) has joined the cast in the role of government suit.

Modine will join Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Catherine Keener, Isabela Moner, and Jeffrey Donovan.

Matthew Modine, who was recently nominated for a Screen Actor’s Guild Award as part of the cast of Netflix’s critically acclaimed original drama Stranger Things, has joined Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin in the Sicario sequel Soldado. The Lionsgate/Black Label Media crime thriller is being directed by Stefano Sollima and was written by Taylor Sheridan.

In the film, Modine portrays Secretary of Defense Director James Ridley opposite Catherine Keener, who plays his Deputy Director.

We’ve heard that Keener and Modine are actually playing C.I.A. figures (Brolin’s bosses), so I’m unsure if Deadline got the right information here. The film is said to focus on plot linking connections between Mexican cartels, organized crime syndicates (most likely Russian mafia), and terrorist groups.

Soldado is without a release date but it’s expected to drop in late 2017.
