Warner Bros. is really surprising us with some serious talent being pulled together to write and direct films set in their new DC Comics Cinematic Universe. Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300, Dawn of The Dead) is doing triple duty directing Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and both parts of Justice League, Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead) is making Wonder Woman who was our favorite for the gig months before her name started showing-up on lists. David Ayer (Training Day, End of Watch, Fury) is ushering a high group of DCCU villains with his film Suicide Squad which includes a brand new Joker played by Jared Leto. Recently, it was revealed that Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street) would be writing the treatment for their Flash movie.
The Hollywood Reporter is naming James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7, Saw, Insidious) as the frontrunner to direct Aquaman that has Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Batman v Superman, Conan The Barbarian) set to star as the lead. Wan recently earned huge success with the seventh installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, which has earned $507M worldwide in under two weeks of release. He has a previous working relationship with Warner Bros. thanks to The Conjuring films, and he is currently prepping The Conjuring: The Enfield Poltergeist for the studio.
Apparently, there are two screenwriters each writing different scripts for the film. One by Will Beall (The Legend of Conan, Gangster Squad) and the other is from Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of An Empire). If they’re able to land James I wouldn’t be shocked if he ends to some rewrites himself.
They point-out that Universal is without a director for Fast and Furious 8 as Justin Lin is off making Star Trek 3, and could act on their option to have Wan return for the sequel. This could cause problems with James being able to make Aquaman, luckily at this point the studio is only in the very early stages of developing the next film.
Aquaman is set for release on July 27th, 2018.
