Game On! (Again)

Feb 10, 2014

You’ve more than likely seen some form of gaming topic debate/discussion involving Trophies and DLC on a forum or blog site. I want to tell you my opinion on this tired subject… let me know if you agree with me!

The widespread use of adding main story DLC to video games has become commonplace in today’s gaming environment. The technological advances in the last couple of console generations have paved the way for DLC to easily reach the consumer, or gamer, who desires to purchase it. While I haven’t looked up the exact numbers, I imagine that DLC sales have been very high. Gamers have spoken with their wallets. In essence we have said this, “I don’t want it to be game over when the end goal has been accomplished.”

In today’s video game culture there are more things to keep us playing a game. Some gamers love to invest at least 50 hours to find 100 percent of the collectibles in games like The Last of Us and the Uncharted series. Other gamers play through games like Guacamelee and Killzone: Mercenary at least twice to earn every single Trophy to unlock that shiny new Platinum Trophy that they can show off to their friends on whatever social media site they log on to. I can identify with both types of gamers. Since the ability to trade-in video games is available to everybody DLC and multiplayer modes have been a necessity to keep gamers playing long after the princess has been rescued, the evil dictator has been overthrown, and the world has been saved from a zombie apocalypse.

tomb raider mpI pose this question to you: what was the last video game you played after earning the Platinum trophy? Was it an RPG like Skyrim? A sports game? A fighting game like Mortal Kombat or Injustice: Gods Among Us? I will share my list of video games I have and will replay countless times at the end of this article. First let me tell you that the number one reason that I play video games is to have fun. If I’m not having fun playing then I am wasting my time. I also want to say that if a video game has a single-player campaign/story that is not good enough to experience a second time, then I won’t hesitate to toss it into the trade bin. The only exception I make is if I play online MP with my friends on a regular basis.

The list of games below include past and present games, some of which I still have trophies to earn. I will still play them after I have earned the Platinum.
