During an interview on the podcast The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith (via The Playlist), writer-director-creator George Miller revealed the title for Mad Max 5 the direct sequel to Mad Max Fury Road. Stating it’s title will be Mad Max The Wasteland, who knows if that’ll stick or it will get changed during further development. Confirming that they developed a bunch of extra material during the production delays of Fury Road, which could mean that we might be getting some dense storytelling with these sequels.
“We’ve got one screenplay and a novella. It happened because with the delays [on ‘Fury Road’], and writing all the backstories, they just expanded.”
Tom Hardy has stated previously he’s signed-on to play Max Rockatansky in three more films, so the possibilities are kind of endless with how rich this world has become thanks to all the delays in production, giving Miller and Brendan McCarthy plenty of time to create an expansion cinematic universe that dwarfs his previous installments in the franchise. Let’s just hope Warner Bros. is smart enough to greenlight these sequels quickly before the movie magic disappears.
Miller also mentioned to the Daily Beast that back in 2006 he had been courting Heath Ledger for the Mad Max role, once it was a given that Mel Gibson wouldn’t be returning. The fellow Aussie had played Mel’s son in The Patriot which I assume had some influence on the casting choice.
“Every time Heath [Ledger] would come through Sydney, he’d call in and we’d chat about Max.”
We currently have no idea when Warner Bros. will announce the next installments, as it could be cost effective to shoot the next two back to back.
