The Green Book is an upcoming civil-rights-era road trip film from writer-director Peter Farrelly (There’s Something About Mary) which is loosely based on the Negro Motorist Green Book (1936-1966). It’s screenplay was co-written by Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga, and Brian Currie.
Omega Underground has learned Green Book begins shooting on November 27th in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Set in 1962, the true story follows Tony Lip (Vallenlonga’s father), one of the best bouncers in New York City who is in need of work after his nightclub, the Copacabana, shuts down. He takes a gig chauffeuring a highly educated piano-playing prodigy Don Shirley, who wants Lip to go on tour with him in the Deep South. While the two clash at first, a bond eventually grows as they travel deeper into the racially charged region.
The film has reportedly landed high-profile leads with recent Oscar-nominee Viggo Mortensen playing Lip and Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali playing Shirley.
We suspect Green Book will land a late 2018 release date just in time for awards season.
