In 2011, author Patrick Ness released a children’s fantasy novel called ‘A Monster Calls’. The story of a young boy who summons a giant monster to protect him as he deals with personal issues at home and his mother’s terminal illness was critically well received. Speculation was that it would be made into a film.
In 2014, Focus Features bought the rights to the film adaptation of Ness’ novel and went into production with Spanish director J.A. Bayona (The Impossible) shooting a screenplay by Ness himself. The film stars Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as the mother and newcomer Lewis MacDougall (Pan) as Conor. Rounding out the cast are Sigourney Weaver (Avatar) as Conor’s Grandmother and Liam Nesson (Taken) as the Monster.
