Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Fantastic Voyage’ Remake Eyeing January Start In Toronto
Omega Underground has learned from a local production source that 20th Century Fox’s remake of the 1966 sci-fi classic The Fantastic Voyage is aiming to begin filming sometime in January and will be shot in Toronto, Ontario.
James Cameron had originally been eyeing the remake only to focus on his Avatar sequels instead. He will still produce alongside Lightstorm Entertainment’s Jon Landu.
The brilliant scientist Jan Benes (Jean Del Val) develops a way to shrink humans, and other objects, for brief periods of time. Benes, who is working in communist Russia, is transported by the CIA to America but is attacked en route. In order to save the scientist, who has developed a blood clot in his brain, a team of Americans in a nuclear submarine is shrunk and injected into Benes’ body. They have a finite period of time to fix the clot and get out before the miniaturization wears off.
In January, THR reported that Guillermo del Toro was in talks for the directing gig, and this new information we’ve uncovered could have confirmed he’s indeed directing.
The location could be extremely telling as Guillermo del Toro has shot his last three films Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, and Fox Searchlight’s The Shape of Water at Pinewood Toronto Studios. We are expecting Fantastic Voyage will be shot at the Toronto facility as well.
Fox has been filming multiple big projects in Hollywood North (Canada) lately including Shane Black’s The Predator 2 and David Leitch’s Deadpool 2 in Vancouver along with Simon Kinberg’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix in Montreal.
Guillermo had recently attempted to convince Hellboy creator Mike Mignola to let him tackle Hellboy 3, only for Mignola to reboot the franchise instead with Neil Marshall directing. It’s possible that this has led to a fast-tracking of Fantastic Voyage.
Should we expect a role for being set aside for Ron Perlman to make up for Hellboy talks breaking down?
Fantastic Voyage is currently without an official release date.
Guillermo’s next film The Shape of Water is set for release on December 8th, 2017.
