This weekend, the seventh film in the lucrative The Fast and the Furious series will be opening. The latest installment, Furious 7, marks Paul Walker’s final film in the series, as he tragically passed away in November 2013. But that won’t stop the series from moving forward once his character is retired at the end of the new film. The series has gotten so much bigger than you could have ever expected, and with each new film, the cast gets bigger and more ridiculous.
Just looking at Furious 7, the cast has series regulars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese, and Ludacris, with new cast members Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, and Tony Jaa. That probably won’t change in the upcoming eighth and ninth films in the series, especially if Helen Mirren has her way.
In a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies, Mirren began talking about how she wants to end up in an upcoming Fast and Furious film:
My great ambition is to be in a Fast and Furious movie. I so want to be a mad driver in a Fast and Furious movie. My claim to fame is I always do my own driving — I was on Top Gear, and I did [my lap] in a very good time. I keep putting it out there, and they never ask me. I’ll be in Fast and Furious 8. I have to say Vin Diesel is brilliant. I love Vin Diesel. He’s a great guy, smart — I love him. It’s partly because of him I’d like to be in one, but also the driving. I’d also love to do another Red-type movie, because those are such fun to do.
Mirren’s quotes are honestly really exciting, because it’s so rare seeing an actress or actor of her caliber talking about wanting to join a big blockbuster series. Many times these are the kind of the films that they seem to avoid. But Mirren’s comments are really exciting, and her love for the series, as well as its core actor Vin Diesel, is really fresh in a time when so many actors seemingly write off big films like this.
Mirren would be such a fun choice for the Fast and Furious series, and I’d be really curious to see how Universal and company could incorporate her into the series. I’d love to see them take the chance and bring her on board in one of the new sequels. Only time will tell if Universal will take Helen Mirren up on her offer, but I think they’d be foolish not to.
Until then, Furious 7 will be opening on April 3, 2015.
