For someone who has been playing FPS or MOBA games, it’s not hard to understand the different roles players can possess in various games. However, since it was my first time to a first-person tactical hero shooter game and my brain kinda goes 404 whenever I read technical stuff about abilities – well, as someone who only likes realistic shooting games.
If you’re new to Valorant, you’ll notice that there are different agent roles that you need to be familiar with. I thought it was easy to play this game because whenever I watch Valorant streamers, it looks so easy. It’s one of those experiences when you watch a certain role from a movie on streaming services, then you suddenly think you can do that too, until you actually try it yourself.
To make it easier for you, here’s what the agent roles in Valorant mean. Let’s talk about them below.
- Controllers
Controllers are the ones who literally control how the game goes. They use their smokes, walls, and abilities to block the enemy’s vision and help the team move safely. Some of the most popular controllers you’ve probably seen are Omen, Brimstone, and Viper. Since Brimstone is the simplest to use according to the descriptions of his skills, I decided to try him first. How hard could it be, right? But I was so wrong. Timing those smokes and placing them in the right spots is a whole different challenge.
But then, if you want to be the mastermind or the brain of the team, you’ll love this role. You will be the reason your team gets to push safely or even win tight rounds. So if you’re strategic enough, you’ll enjoy playing Brim and other controllers. Just make sure that you’re not lagging and your internet provider is at its A-game when you play.
- Duelists
Do you remember the guy who was with you during training? Yeah, he’s one of the most popular duelists in Valorant. These agents are designed to become the entry fraggers and create openings to get kills and make space for the team. So if you’re a duelist, you’ll be the first to enter the site and take the risk. But you also have to know that you’ll be the “sacrifice” of the team as well.
The first duelist I mastered was Phoenix. It was so funny to me because I was practicing him with my friends, and I kept blinding them with his flashes instead of the enemies. They would yell, “Stop blinding us!” every single round, and I’d just laugh because I swear I thought I aimed it the right way. Once I got the hang of it, though, it felt amazing. Getting that first entry kill or using Phoenix’s ultimate to check corners safely made me feel like a hero (at least until I got caught reloading).
You need to have fast internet when you play this game by the way. Otherwise, you’ll keep disconnecting and lagging, and you won’t be able to enjoy the game.
- Initiators
Initiators are the ones who make everything happen. They help the team enter sites safely, gather information about enemy positions, and disrupt defenders hiding in tricky corners. Just think of it this way. Duelists can’t shine if the initiator doesn’t prepare the play first.
Fade easily became my favorite because her abilities are just so satisfying to use. There’s something so cool about throwing her haunt and instantly knowing where the enemies are hiding. When I first played Fade, though, I messed up her abilities so many times. I’d throw the haunt too early, or it would land on the roof, where no one could see it. But once I figured out how to use her properly, it changed the way I played.
- Sentinels
Sentinels are the calm, collected defenders of Valorant. They’re the ones who lock down sites, protect flanks, and make sure the team doesn’t get surprised from behind. They don’t usually run into fights like Duelist. They focus on controlling areas and keeping everyone safe.
Sage is probably the most popular sentinel, but Cypher, Killjoy, and Deadlock are also favorites. When I played Sage for the first time, I thought it would be chill — heal people, put up a wall, easy, right? Then my whole team started yelling “Heal me!” all at once, and I panicked and literally just quit the game (since I got scared of being trashtalked).
Playing this won’t let you get the most kills, but when you save a teammate, catch a sneaky flanker, or clutch a round with your traps or walls, that feels so good.
Ready to Play Another Round of Valorant?
Understanding each agent’s role makes the game way more enjoyable and a lot less confusing. Once you know what your role is and how it fits into the team, the game will be easier. You start to appreciate every play, every setup, and even those chaotic moments when everything goes wrong. But of course, manage your expectations because not all roles are fulfilled by the players who are using them. Sometimes your Duelist won’t entry, or your Sentinel forgets to watch flank, but don’t lose your head and just do your best.
